Weapon impact calculations

For calculations of the amount of force or energy needed to perform various weapon impact feats, such as knocking someone flying, chopping a head off, or smashing through a wall with a hammer.

How hard can Dain's hammer hit?

If we assume that the hammer's head is solid iron, then it probably weighs about 7 grams. Dain swings it at about 4 feet per second, and the impact lasts for about 0.25 seconds, so the peak impact force is 0.068 N, or 7 grams. [1] Over a distance of 0.0508 m, that's 0.0034544 J.

γ = 0.127 m/s ÷ 1 sec = 0.127 m/s

F=m*γ
0.05 x 0.127 = 0.00635 Newtons (N)

That's about 0.6475 grams.

I got the formula from here.

To find work, multiply the force by the distance.

Distance thrown is probably about 0.3048 meters.
0.00635 x 0.3048 = 0.00193548 joules.

By throwing distance:
0.00635 x 0.1016 = 0.00064516 joules.

The Dwarves are thrown about 0.3048 meters.

0.05 x 9.8˛ x 0.3048 = ~1.46

1.46 = 0.5 x 0.05 x velocity˛
0.5 x 0.05 = 0.025

0.5 x 0.05 x 58.4 = 1.46
1.46 x 1.46 = ~2

24.5 grams. The Berserkers would obviously have to be thrown faster to actually lift off.

After doing a few calcs for Dain, I wondered if he could really hit as hard as seen on screen (0.5 N or 51g).

The hammer can't be solid iron or steel—it would weigh 7g, which is like a 150 lb man swinging a hammer weighing 25 lbs, and real warhammers were usually only a few pounds.[1] To be practical, it would have to weigh around 3g, as mice are proportionally stronger than humans.

If Dain swings the hammer at 25 m/s, and the impact lasts for 0.2 seconds, then it will impact with an average force of 0.375N and a maximum of 0.75N.[2] That's 38-76g.

By shear strength: 0.058 x 4.4 = 0.2552

The first one is probably more accurate, but let's find out the energy for sure.

Sword demensions: 0.045 x 0.327 x 3.7 = ~0.0545 cc
Density of steel: I will use low-end because this is a very good sword. 7.75 g/cc.
Mass of the sword: 0.0545 x 7.75 = ~0.4224 g 0.0004224 kg
Speed of Aragorn's swing: 80 m/s ÷ 14 = ~5.7143

0.4224 0.0004224 x 0.5 = 0.2112 0.0002112
5.7143 x 5.7143 = ~32.6532
0.2112 0.0002112 x 32.6532 = 1.72389888 0.00689635584 joules
