Phaser yield calculations thread

This is where we put calculations of RW phaser yields. As always, treat each example as if it happened in RW, with the same scaling and mechanisms. So, even if ST phasers use an exotic chain reaction instead of raw energy, act like they use the latter like in RW.

According to a Wiki page, a light phaser shot has the same explosive power as 35g of TNT. [1] 35g of TNT = 146440 joules. [2] The energy required to melt 25g of ice at its freezing point is 8290 joules. [3] So a phaser shot from the DPS New Orleans can melt 1.76 kg of ice, or melt and vaporize 19 grams of iron. However, only about 50% of the blast energy will hit the target, so these numbers are likely high.

I will assume the Yridian starship is about 4 feet long. I will also assume that it weighs around 20 kg and is made of iron. To melt-vaporize 20 kg of iron takes about 152 megajoules, about two hundred times the maximum yield of a heavy turbolaser. That's absurd, unless the ship is loaded with explosives. Of course, it also wouldn't blow up like that.

The first phaser shot appears to vaporize about 600 kg of iron. 4578 megajoules are needed to do that—absurd.

The energy needed to vaporize 1 kilogram of silicon is roughly 13.23 MJ/kg. [1][2] In 1/10 of a second, maybe 20 grams are vaporized. This requires about 265 joules. So the phaser is delivering 2650 joules per one-second shot, or 0.63 grams of TNT.

By destruction: to vaporize 2.5 kg of iron requires roughly 19 megajoules (19000000 joules, or 4.54 kg of TNT). Not possible for a heavy phaser.

By blast radius: the yield is probably about 188280 joules (0.1 lb or 45 grams of TNT), as the radius is about 2 meters. [1] Totally possible for a heavy phaser.

To vaporize 300g of iron takes about 2.5 megajoules—2500000 joules. That's 590g of TNT. Not possible, but not crazily absurd either, especially if the pods' reactors and fuel add to the explosions. A powerful phaser could melt (not vaporize) 300g.

The larger explosion is from the ship's exploding reactor. The smaller one has a radius of about 2 feet, and so is about 22g. [1] Very realistic. [2]

Way-too-slow phaser beam

Looks like it melts the surface, but doesn't vaporize it (the armor is glowing, but not steaming). Steel glows yellow-white at about 1200C. [1] Therefore, the energy required is about 90J. [2] This assumes 100% of the phaser's energy is going to the armor, but this is clearly not the case. So the beam has a yield range of about 80-200J.
