Sometimes we want to calculate the heat or temperature of a fire or explosion. This is a common and very useful calculation type, and there are several methods.


Color:
To estimate temperature by color, just see what color the flame is. Then take a look at a flame color chart like this one.
     This method is very simple but also somewhat unreliable (usually only perhaps 7/10). Flame color charts sometimes differ a bit from each other—this one is slightly different from this one.


Destruction/melting:
This is essentially the same as the Destruction Method for explosions. There are a couple ways to approach it:

• You can look at how many kg of a given substance it melted/vaporized. For how to do this, click here.
• Use this method: heat (in joules) = mass of object (in kg) × change in temperature (in Celcius) × specific heat capacity of material (in kJ/kg K). It is superior to the first for smaller levels of destruction.

However, the destruction/melting methods only give answers for heat, not temperature.
