I've seen a lot of implausible weapons on my day, but this one might take the cake.

I have personally made and tested a wooded double-ended axe. It was... not practical. I couldn't do any damage with it, and the range was badly stunted. The wonky balance meant that it was impossible to hit anything hard enough, and I can't imagine how heavy the one in the show would be.
     What's sad is that it might almost make sense in Stoick or Gobber's hands, as they could conceivably be able to spin it fast enough. But Heather? That tiny girl would barely be able to lift that hunk of metal. Even if the shaft were made of vibranium, it would still be too big and awkward for a non-giant to use.

Real war hammers were not that big. They'd be too heavy to use properly, and besides the large head spreads out the impact instead of focusing it.
